Can the Yankees Win the World Series?

The New York Yankees have won 27 World Series so far in franchise’s history, but can they finally win their 28th after a nine year drought? Although, the Yankees have the second best record in baseball right now with a winning percentage of .626, they will most likely be the first American League team to secure a spot for the Wild Card game. Last year the Yanks won the wild card game against the Minnesota Twins, then continued to roll and win the series against the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees went down 2-0 in the ALCS but rallied back to tie the series with the Astros 3-3 for the right to go to the World Series. The Astros took game 7 and went on to win the World Series.

Most MLB teams have rebuilding periods of 3-10 years but the Yankees turned the bus around in one. In 2017 The Yankees were definitely the underdogs and surprisingly went deep into the postseason. The Bombers offense was good last year but in 2018 their lineup is dangerous. The 2017 starting lineup consisted of: Sanchez, Bird, Castro, Gregorious, Headly, Gardner, Ellsbury, Judge and Holliday. The 2018 Yankees beefed up their lineup by trading Starlin Castro for the 2017 National League MVP and home run leader for the NL with 59 HR, Giancarlo Stanton. Along with Stanton the Yanks brought up prospects, Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres, all of which are playing well. If the Yankees can get to the World Series this lineup will for sure help them win.

If the Yankees want to get to the World Series or even farther than the Wild Card game their starting lineup will have to be at full health. 2017 Rookie of the Year, Aaron Judge, is out with a wrist fracture, starting catcher, Gary Sanchez, is out to a groin strain and DiDi Gregorius is out with a heel contusion.  Last year Judge and Sanchez had a combined total of  87 Home Runs, with these guys out the Yankees aren’t the same team. It’s not just their hitters that are injured either, pitchers CC Sabathia, Aroldis Chapman, and Jordan Montgomery are all on the DL as well. If these players can return to the lineup and bullpen then the Yankees are serious contenders for the 2018 World Series.

The Yankees will likely play Oakland A’s or Houston Astros who are neck and neck for the second Wild Card spot. If they advance we could see them play a rivalry and post season series against the Red Sox who currently have the best record in the MLB. If they can fight off the American League their potential competitors in the National League could be the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Braves or Dodgers. Some say it’s a stretch to say that the Yankees can make it past the Wild Card game, but the Yanks, if healthy, can truly be a dangerous competitor for all teams in this postseason bracket and could most likely win the 2018 World Series.
