Review: Sorry To Bother You

Writer: Kameron Henry

A couple of weeks ago, I went to go see Sorry To Bother You with a few friends. Originally going into this movie, I was really happy to see it. The film was directed and written by Boots Riley, a rapper-turned-director. When I heard that, I was hoping the movie would be great. After seeing the film, I can only say it was quite odd.

In a previous article, I stated this movie was going to be interesting. On that front, at least, I wasn’t disappointed. According to IMDB, the plot of the movie is “In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.”  When the movie began, I didn’t believe it was going to get too crazy. I knew the “using your white voice” was going to throw me off. I was so used to hearing the actors’ voices; hearing them coming from different people’s body was unsettling. About halfway through, the movie began to change. I’ve seen a lot of movies with plots like Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Donnie Darko. This movie was definitely one for the books. The twist in the movie was so outrageous that one of my friends walked out the theatre ,and couldn’t come back to finish the film. Once you got past the twist all hell broke loose, and the movie began to descend down the rabbit hole. When the film was over, a gentlemen behind me said, “What the heck did I just watch ?”

I can honestly say Sorry to Bother You was the weirdest film I’ve seen to date. The cinematography was on a whole different level, not to mention the acting was on point. The downfall of the film was the plot twist. I believe the twist was simply too much for the movie, so I will give it a 7.5 out of 10.
