What to Expect from Rock in 2018

2017 was a great year for rock and roll, we saw the return of the Foo Fighters, Beck, Queens of the Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, and even more. As the year comes to a close I began thinking about what’s coming, and it got me very excited. Some of my favorite bands have confirmed that they will be putting out new music next year, I thought this year was great for the genre, but 2018 is looking even better.

Alice In Chains: It’s hard to think about alt-rock without mentioning this band. This year the band celebrated the 25th anniversary of their sophomore album Dirt, which you can read about here. At the same time, the band also confirmed a new album coming in 2018. Jerry Cantrell, the bands guitarist and lead song writer said “a new album isn’t far off”. This will be the bands 6th album overall and 3rd with singer William Duvall. The band has also announced a spring tour for next year and are headlining the music festival, “Northern Invasion” in Wisconsin along with Tool and Avenged Sevenfold.

A Perfect Circle and Tool: I could gush about these bands and their singer Maynard James Keenan for hours as they are my favorite bands of all time, and people who know me know that I can, and will, never shut up about them. It's been a long running joke that the new Tool album will never come out because of multiple false reports throughout the year. However, there has been multiple confirmations from Maynard and other members of the band that they are working on new music. That also goes for A Perfect Circle, which have actually released a single and confirmed a new album coming next year. I wrote about the single here and I thought it was just as fresh as their debut album Mer De Noms. Both bands have been touring a lot recently, I got to see APC back in April, but they are also slated to play a lot of shows next year. These are groups that I will be following closely next year, and well into the future.

Stone Temple Pilots: So within the last couple weeks rock fans (including me) have been marveling in the return of STP. I recently wrote a long article noting the rather somber history and why the announcement of a new singer matters. I don’t want to repeat myself too much, so you can get up to speed here. Long story short, after the announcement, the band released a new single that blew up in the charts, landing at the top of Spotify’s rock lists. They also announced a spring tour, and told fans to expect new music early next year.

Honorable Mentions: Now that I have gotten my favorites out of the way I wanted to talk about a few bands that have unexpectedly confirmed new music for next year. These are not listed in any particular order, I just thought that I should mention these. If only just a few of the albums actually come out next year, 2018 is looking like a good year for rock.
