Giancarlo Stanton Blockbuster

Writer: Aaron Hendon

Wowza where do we begin, early Saturday morning, Buster Olney of ESPN reported that the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins had come to terms on a blockbuster trade sending reigning NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton to the big apple. Late Friday night, there were other reports that even though the Marlins had agreed to terms with both the Cardinals and Giants. Unfortunately for those 2 teams, Stanton was able to use his no trade clause and block both of them from happening. The full trade details have not been reported yet, but from what has been talked about prior to the shocking news coming out, the Yankees will not have to give up top prospect Gleyber Torres, albeit, they will have to take on all 295 million that’s left on Stanton’s outrageous contract. 2B Starlin Castro and 2 other prospects will also be a part of the deal, Miami will need to fill their hole on the right side of the diamond after sending Dee Gordon to Seattle Thursday night. Castro hit .300 last season with 16 homers and knocked in 63 runs.

Looking ahead to Stanton getting his first action in the pinstripes ought to be exciting playing alongside reigning AL Rookie of the Year, Aaron Judge who held his own trying to keep pace with Stanton in the home run race. Judge and Stanton combined hit 111 home runs, which is just 17 behind the entire Giants team. Not to mention they finished 1 and 2 in the home run race, could they do the same in 2018? The last 2 teammates to finish 1 and 2 were Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Willie McCovey in 1965. It’ll be interesting to see how 1st year coach Aaron Boone manages these 2 monsters seeing how they both play RF. Luckily, he has the luxury of the DH, so switching them out should be no problem.
