Halloween: The time tricks and treats are received the most throughout the year. With the holiday being just being around the corner, there are still a lot of things people never knew about Halloween. Here’s a few interesting facts about the holiday that you probably didn’t know.
Dancing For Treats- The tradition of knocking on door to door traces back to the middle ages. But to receive candy, the original tradition was performing dances, plays, and pray in order to receive candy.
Silly String Ban- Being on Hollywood Halloween night may be risky if you’re a fan of silly string. The ban of silly string in Hollywood was created in 2004 and only enforced Halloween night. If you’re caught with Silly String on Halloween, a fine of 1,000 dollars will need to be paid.
Halloween Symbols Are Not Random- Black cats, spiders and ghosts are all Halloween symbols because of their ties to Wiccans. These were thought to the familiars of witches in the middle ages and are often associated with bad luck.
Jack-O-Lanterns Were made out of other vegetables, not pumpkins- The jack-o-lantern comes from an ancient Irish tale named The Legend of Stingy Jack . In the story, Jack put coal into a turnip as a lantern, and Stingy Jack became “Jack of the Lantern” or “Jack o’ Lantern.” Because of this myth, the irish carved different faces into turnips, beets and potatoes to scare away Stingy Jack or any other spirits of the night.
Cabbage Night- As popular as the holiday may be, there are still many countries that refer to the holiday as “Cabbage night”. Some people in the Northeastern continue a tradition of collecting rotten vegetables and leaving them near neighbors doors.
